In Santo Tirso, Portugal, the Hous3 architecture studio reinterprets the stereotype of the traditional Portuguese house.
From the street you can see the house, on a small hill, a sharply dark silhouette contrast with its natural environment, with a broad view of Santo Tirso. Its simple lines are the reinterpretation of the traditional Portuguese house, with a gable roof. "We started by defining a north-east-southeast axis in the longitudinal direction of the terrain and oriented in the best view of the place ”. And in this linear orientation, the main volume is arranged in a playful way reconfiguration of the traditional house, which becomes noticeable in the landscape.
To this is annexed a smaller volume, which in addition to completing the functional needs of the house is also an allusion to the annexes that traditionally are constant additions to the main house. This volume deviates from the entrance to the lot to create a sort of external decompression atrium. And in the simplicity of the composition of these two volumes, an intuitive understanding of the spaces is promoted, inviting us to enter.
With regard to the distribution of functions, the reception hall is the first point of contact with the house, leading us to the central and common areas of the house: dining room, living room and kitchen, large and generous with lots of natural light coming from a negative volume, which is used as an extension of the internal room towards the outside, towards the swimming pool and the external dining room, taking advantage of the rhythmic plays of light in the afternoon.
This central block also allows us to separate two spaces which had to be independent: for the south-east, the private area, a corridor distributes the rooms and a small office, all with outdoor spaces accessible through glass doors that balance the view, and physical connections to the landscape of each room.
Northeast, the technical living and working areas, with double height; On these two areas, the traditional shape of the gable roof allowed the interior spaces to be modeled to complement the nature of the functions, creating a place for reading and studying. Thanks to the simplicity and relevance of its interior design, with light, minimalist and smooth walls, it offers a peaceful living space. In contrast to the dark exterior, where the black tile and pine along with the building's simple shape create a striking graphic silhouette against the landscape. Overall, through the juxtaposition of its facade materials, we get closer to the natural, to the beautiful, where we hope that its inhabitants will be happy.
