PLI by Foscarini is a suspension lamp designed by Felicia Arvid, a young Danish designer. The lamp stands out for its sinuous and innovative design, in which the light source becomes the supporting structure.

Foscarini, the internationally renowned lighting company, presents its latest novelty for 2023: PLI, a suspension lamp that stands out for its sinuous design and its essentiality in the planning gesture. Created by the young Danish designer Felicia Arvid, PLI represents her first entry into the world of lighting, but despite this, it proves to be an extraordinary work that combines form, material and structure in a single creative gesture.

The PLI lamp is characterized by its innovative concept: the light source becomes the supporting structure of the entire system. By passing through a thin sheet like a needle, the light creates a series of folds, drapes and waves, holding its position. This particular design approach is typical of the poetics of Felicia Arvid, a 28-year-old designer, but already winner of the prestigious Compasso d'Oro award in 2022 for the design of an acoustic panel. Arvid focuses on simplifying the project, combining functional and decorative elements. In her works, materials are treated like fabrics, folded and draped to transform them into load-bearing structures with a great decorative and evocative impact.

“PLI is my first lamp”Arvid explains. “In the common imagination, lamps combine a body and a lampshade, inside which a light source is inserted. I chose to start from the latter, building around it a speaker whose design was a direct consequence. My goal was to obtain a soft and non-invasive light”.

In the PLI lamp, the light source is a tube that contains a LED strip, onto which a very thin perforated sheet is directly inserted, thus creating a series of soft folds, overhangs and drapes that look like waves. The material of the diffuser, which is initially two-dimensional, then takes on a three-dimensional shape, held in place precisely by the light source. Light, sinuous and poetic, PLI is available in two versions: wood and paper, each with a different luminous effect.

In the wooden version, the light is more concentrated upwards and downwards, while in the paper version a greater diffusion of light is obtained thanks to the extremely thin thickness of the sheet, which allows a delicate translucency even on the sides of the lamp. “Thinking about the use of PLI on a table, it is perfect for decisively illuminating the surface and, at the same time, the faces of the diners in a more delicate way”Arvid says.

Felicia Arvid's passion for fabrics reveals her creative path. Before graduating in Architecture, you studied Fashion Design and developed a collection of multifunctional clothes-objects. This brief experience allowed her to discover her true interest: the possibility of creating essential solutions in which function and form merge, with the material becoming the absolute protagonist of the project, just as it happens in PLI.

The PLI lamp by Foscarini represents an innovation in the world of lighting, thanks to its unique conception in which the light source becomes the supporting structure. The curvy design and the soft folds, drapes and waves give the lamp an elegant and atmospheric look. The choice of materials, both wood and paper, offers two distinct lighting effects, allowing the lighting to be adapted to different needs and environments.

Felicia Arvid, with her creative vision and her innovative approach to design, has confirmed her talent also in the field of lighting. PLI is just the beginning of a promising career and represents a perfect balance between functionality, aesthetics and materials. Thanks to its simplicity and attention to detail, this lamp fits perfectly into contemporary environments, adding a touch of elegance and originality.

Foscarini, always in constant search for new solutions and collaborations with talented designers, once again demonstrates its leadership in the lighting sector. PLI represents a precious addition to their collection, a lamp that embodies beauty and functionality, bringing a unique and suggestive atmosphere to any space it is inserted into.
