The Civic Library of Bressanone: Where the ancient meets the contemporary to promote culture it has been modified: 2023-06-30 di Benedetto Fiori

The new Civic Library of Bressanone, design by Carlana Mezzalira Pentimalli, is an example of contemporary architecture that blends harmoniously into the heart of the historic city centre. Located a few steps from the Duomo, it represents not only a space dedicated to learning and sharing, but also a meeting place and social cohesion for the entire community.

The project is based on the idea of creating an open and welcoming environment, conceived not only as a container for books, but as a place where people can interact, exchange knowledge and experience different cultures. Architects Michel Carlana, Luca Mezzalira and Curzio Pentimalli have worked to create a structure that blends harmoniously with the surrounding context, creating an indissoluble link between the new and the old.

The architectural complex consists of a new building and the recovery of pre-existing buildings, such as the former Finance, the former Court and the former prison. Furthermore, the external spaces have been redefined, including two pedestrian accesses and an adjacent garden. The new building rises like a 'tree of culture', with its branches connecting to the existing buildings, creating a unique connection between the past and the present.

Inside the building, the focus has been on the flexibility and adaptability of the spaces. The external walls in concrete and the wooden boiserie create a double perimeter shell, freeing the interiors from functional constraints and allowing for an optimal distribution of spaces. The different areas, such as the vertical distribution, the toilets and the bookshops, are organized in such a way as to favor the use and flexible management of the library.

Furthermore, the project includes strategic access points that make it possible to make the complex permeable at different levels. This allows the buildings and outdoor spaces to be used autonomously, adapting them to the different functions and events taking place within the library.

During the implementation of the project, particular attention was paid to natural lighting, considered essential for reading and keeping books. The south wall of the building has been blinded to prevent direct sunlight from entering, while the interior has been equipped with a "bookcase wall" that occupies the entire height, transforming itself into a library poster as a treasure trove of knowledge .

Furthermore, the architectural design has reinterpreted the characteristic “erkers” present in the historic center of Bressanone, integrating them in a contemporary way. These elements, which overlook the city's points of interest, such as the main square or the Isarco river, offer spaces for relaxation and reading with a panoramic view. The erkers have been designed with large windows to allow in natural light and create a bright and welcoming atmosphere.

The Bressanone City Library was also conceived as a multifunctional cultural centre. In addition to the spaces dedicated to reading and consulting books, there are areas for temporary exhibitions, cultural meetings, conferences and workshops. In this way, the library becomes a dynamic and lively place, able to offer a wide range of cultural and educational experiences for all ages.

Technology has been intelligently integrated within the structure. There are modern computer workstations, high-speed Wi-Fi connection and digital services that allow users to access digital resources, e-books and other online sources of knowledge. At the same time, the library has maintained a balance between technology and the traditional experience of reading, providing ample space for book storage and for the sensory experience of leafing through and immersing yourself in reading.

The Civic Library of Bressanone stands as a cultural and social reference point for the local community. It promotes access to knowledge, the sharing of ideas and the enhancement of culture, contributing to the formation and development of the community. Thanks to its innovative architecture, its functional design and its open and inclusive vocation, the library represents a place of inspiration and meeting for all those who wish to enrich their lives through reading and learning.
