The Clube De Vela da Costa Nova restaurant, designed by Ferreira Arquitectos, represents a renewal that combines history and innovation. The aim of the project was to preserve the recognizable look of the place, but at the same time update it with modern technologies.
The Costa Nova Sailing Club, one of the oldest sailing clubs in the Ria de Aveiro estuary area, was divided into three main spaces: the restaurant, the bar for club members and the terrace. For each of these spaces there was a specific audience with different preferences and traditions, which presented a major challenge for this project. The aim was to renovate a space damaged by time and, at the same time, maintain the recognizable look of the "old", respecting the memories and their value, still relevant for all members of the Club.
Thus, the wood remained as the background of the typical Costa Nova huts, in order to root this memory. However, it has always been used in combination with modern technologies, for example, in backlit wooden pieces, to create a unique and comfortable environment. As for the morphology of the space, it was evident that its excessive division impeded the flow of the path, so we decided to create a single counter, which maintained, albeit in a sublime way, the division between the restaurant and the bar. In the restaurant, we decided to take advantage of the rear view of the ria through large windows with a minimalist expression to maintain a cleaner panoramic view. And the kitchen, now enlarged, allowed the user to monitor the work and its condition.
The design of the Restaurante Clube De Vela da Costa Nova blends harmoniously between tradition and modernity. Wood, a historical material of the area, is used in an innovative way, combining it with contemporary technologies to create a unique atmosphere. The backlit wooden walls add a touch of modernity, creating a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere. The choice of a single counter to separate the restaurant from the bar allows for a better fluidity in the path of guests, while ensuring an elegant and subtle design experience.
The panoramic view of the ria, made possible by the large windows, adds an element of natural beauty to the restaurant. Guests can enjoy the surrounding landscape while tasting the delicious dishes prepared in the enlarged kitchen.
