An artist's loft in the heart of Rome, close to the Colosseum, designed by the Alvisi Kirimoto studio. Romantic atmospheres and contemporary design blend with the panoramic view of the Colosseum. A unique experience of style and beauty. In the heart of Rome, between the picturesque slopes of Colle Oppio and the imposing Colosseum, the top two floors of a building have been transformed into an artist's loft, an enchanting place, between romanticism and contemporary solutions. The renovation project is the work of the Alvisi Kirimoto architecture studio, which took on the challenge of redesigning this unique space.
The client was clear: to completely transform the general appearance of the apartment, improve the distribution of spaces, and above all, free up the panoramic view of the majestic Colosseum. The greatest challenge was to keep the number of rooms unchanged to accommodate the artist's friends who frequently visit his atelier. The attic and super-attic featured a labyrinthine layout typical of the 60s, with continuous unevenness and fragmented spaces caused by an intrusive load-bearing structure.
The architects began their work by introducing an entrance hall, characterized by custom-made semi-transparent glass doors, which guarantee maximum light permeability. These doors, with a wenge wood profile and handles shaped in the same material, have been further embellished with a layer of linen inside the glass. This choice allows light to filter into the heart of the home, creating a unique sensory experience.
A naval-inspired staircase, made with a single block of wenge wood and an elegant crystal handrail, was positioned asymmetrically next to the service rooms. This staircase allows you to create a more private wing of the house, which leads to the artist's bedroom, dominated by an original fireplace with marble profile. A corridor parallel to the side balcony overlooking the Colosseum leads to the dressing table and bathroom, where the powder pink shades evoke the elegance of the 30s.
On the opposite side of the house, in visual connection with the dressing room, is the studio-atelier, with a second side balcony that leads to the upper floor. The terracotta tile floor and the planters in similar material integrate perfectly with the surrounding Roman roofs. The studio, the artist's true refuge, features a custom-made wall bookcase with a metal structure and wenge wood veneer, which frames a second original bronze fireplace.
An independent wing, separated by a wenge wood slat door in continuity with the stairwell, is dedicated to guests. Here, a sky-blue bathroom and a double-height master bedroom with another custom-made wall bookcase offer exclusive comfort. Everything was custom designed to meet the owner's needs.
A distinctive element of this project are the refined wallpapers that cover the walls, defining the various environments and creating unique atmospheres. The floral motifs, lively brushstrokes and Japanese-inspired details add personality and character to the spaces, interacting with the exterior and creating an engaging visual experience.
A tailoring approach was followed in every detail of the project, including the bathrooms. Sinks, shower trays and bathtubs made of single blocks of fine marble were hand-designed by Junko Kirimoto, co-founder of the studio.
The wenge wood parquet covers the entire house, including the upper floor, which houses a service bathroom and a significantly enlarged kitchen. A counter separates the dining area from the meal preparation area, with furniture covered in wenge wood and Carrara marble top.
The most surprising part of the project is the upper floor, which was transformed into a large open space thanks to a structural intervention that allowed the total renovation of the roof. This space opens onto a breathtaking view of Rome through a system of ribbon windows. A wenge wood top acts as a raised podium for the living area, offering a unique panoramic view. The colorful and irreverent furnishings, carefully chosen, were designed to balance the monumentality of the surrounding historical context.
Furthermore, an external wrought iron staircase leads to a series of panoramic terraces offering a 360° view of Rome, making this artist's loft even more special.
