Eastman introduces Saflex interlayers® Fly Safe 3D PVB, a highly effective way to avoid bird collisions with glass facades, without compromising visibility.

Around the world, billions of birds die as a result of colliding with windows and glass facades. To such an extent that numerous cities and nations now prescribe bird-saving glass for new buildings. In response to this global problem, Eastman, in partnership with SEEN AG, came up with a new polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer for laminated glass: Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™, a highly effective solution for avoiding bird collisions without compromising the visibility or aesthetics of the glass facades.

Unlike other bird protection approaches, which make use of decals, prints or etchings on the glass surface, Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™ uses three-dimensional glossy stamps between two layers of glass. The glossy stamps capture the light at different angles, shimmering softly to keep birds away from the glass, which the two-dimensional stamps and stripes fail to do.
Due to the 3D nature of glossy stamps, less coverage is required; the discreet motif of the glossy stamps covers less than 1% of the glass surface. Other solutions considered highly effective have at least five times the coverage and can exceed 25%. Also, as the glossy stamps are layered between the panes, it is a long-lasting solution for bird protection.

"Given the predominance of glass in modern architecture, bird collisions are a global problem"said Heather Singler, Eastman's Global Architecture Business Sales Director. “Too often, birds fail to see glass and misjudge reflections, resulting in avoidable collisions. And we can actually avoid such collisions. Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™ has proven highly effective as a deterrent against bird collisions ”.

The Collision Laboratories in Hohenau-Ringelsdorf (Austria) have separately tested and evaluated the 3D reflective technology employed in Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™. In terms of transmission and reflection tests, it is recognized in the industry and by ornithologists as one of the best products, classified as highly effective, long lasting and with better aesthetics. Additionally, Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™ helps builders and building owners comply with emerging bird protection regulations and certifications, including earning LEED Sspc55 pilot credits for bird collision deterrence since the American Bird Conservancy has indicated a threat factor of less than 10.

The minimal coverage of bird deterrent light stamps makes Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™ interlayers ideal for a variety of applications, including lobbies, balustrades, claddings, buffer facades, exterior doors, facades, connecting bridges, glass stages, skylights and windows.

In addition to avoiding the collision of birds, Saflex® FlySafe 3D ™ interlayers can be combined with select coatings and other Saflex products to further enhance the glass, giving it greater safety, stability, acoustic control, solar control and protection from harmful UV rays.

"Even if your city administration doesn't require bird-saving buildings, it's the right thing to do"Singler said. "Our experts can help you choose the right type of interlayer (or combination of interlayers) to achieve your safety, structural and aesthetic goals, while protecting countless birds without compromising on effectiveness and coverage. surfaces ".
