The role of light, the rosettes and the artistic glass windows of the Gothic style inspire the new Catuma eyewear collections.
Catuma, a high quality eyewear brand made in Puglia, from the beginning, loved to amaze. And he did it through daring commingling, endless stylistic research, love for details, care in color combinations, guided by the dictates of two seemingly distant worlds, art and architecture.
On the occasion of MIDO 2018, the brand presented two different collections: the first, inspired by an artistic period that strongly influenced the history of European art: gothic; the second, influenced by the Caravaggio style.
Aplomb Collection, leaded glass windows and Gothic rose windows
The “Aplomb” collection, in fact, refers to leaded windows, rose windows and their infinite ranges of colors, protagonists of Gothic architecture. Present on the main aisles, chapels or transverse arms, the works of art of the master glassmakers of the Gothic period have enriched the jewels of European architecture with inestimable beauty. These windows allowed the light to filter, giving it a very strong symbolic importance, as an opposition to darkness. In fact, in Gothic art, the stained glass technique has replaced the continuous walls of Romanesque churches, opening them to the light, giving lightness and enhancing the beauty and colors of the rose windows.
For the "Aplomb" collection, the Catuma designers have drawn inspiration from these ancient decoration techniques, creating optical frames and sunglasses with undeniable charm. The lead windows replaced wood and stone, a sort of axiom with the materials used in the latest collections of the brand, gradually replaced by lighter components. Each model in fact presents impalpable geometric designs in gold, copper or green, filled with colored and translucent lacquers with a glass effect, which make each piece unique and sophisticated. The ultralight front, sometimes round, sometimes square or rhomboidal, presents a complicated cigliare that develops in linear and rigorous designs in metal, filled with inserts in colored lacquers. The glasses are then fired and finished by Apulian artisans, completed by marble effect acetate terminals, which give greater elegance.
The name of the collection, "Aplomb", recalls the decorative technique of the windows, but at the same time wants to evoke the cool and casual charm of the wearer.
The role of light as opposed to darkness is also the protagonist in the "Shadows" collection.
Shadow Collection, the drama of Caravaggesque light
The models of the other collection, in fact, refer to the use of Caravaggesque light, a direct light, able to illuminate anything that is found along its radius, studied and measured in order to obtain an effect capable of capturing the observer's gaze. . Caravaggio used light as a sort of reflector, able to focus on certain details and themes, directing the light and its effect.
The frames in "Shadows" in fact, are characterized by front panels in total black steel, straight, squared or with unusual shapes such as the rhombus, which are flanked by soft round models. Each frame is worked with galvanized gold, semi-gloss, copper or ruthenium. Subsequently, the fronts are covered in matt black, leaving splashes of the colors below.
The end result is frames with dark charm, which seem to be illuminated by light at certain points.
For some models, in which the opaque black is matched to the ruthenium, a special "dripped" effect has been applied, which makes the surface of the frame bathed by dew appear.
Each model of the Catuma collections is equipped with Zeiss antireflective lenses.
