Color, decoration and historical quotation: Vito Nesta The rooms of the hotel in which Giuseppe Verdi lived for thirty years intervene with unusual site-specific installations.

From 9 to 14 April 2019 on the occasion of Milan Design Week 2019 the designer Vito Nesta presents his first solo show "Musica da viaggio" at the Grand Hotel et de Milan. Vito Nesta in the rooms of Giuseppe Verdi, curated by Annalisa Rosso.

The Grand Hotel et de Milan is a symbol of the city, full of events full of meaning that have marked its more than one hundred and fifty years of existence. Since the late nineteenth century, the only hotel in Milan equipped with postal and telegraphic services, has seen passing men and women who have marked the history: diplomats, entrepreneurs, artists from all over the world, often linked to the nearby Teatro alla Scala.

A space completely similar to Nesta's research, which uses memory as an infinite archive from which to draw freely to create a new design that embraces color, decoration and dialogue with history. It is no coincidence that the personal Music of travel was conceived as a site-specific project in the Stanze di Giuseppe Verdi, where the Maestro lived for about thirty years during his long stays in Milan, and died in the 1901.

On show, among the original furnishings, a sequence of installations on an architectural scale that play with the chromatic range, as Verdi used melody and harmony to compose his scores. "Synesthetic modulations that are reflected in each other, approaching and sometimes moving away without ever interrupting the exchange of references.

"An immersive experience for visitors, of absolute pleasure" tells the curator Annalisa Rosso "An opportunity to spy - literally - into the world of the designer, made up of a prolific imagery of reworkings and evocations that come from eras and geographic places that are also very distant from each other".

There is no shortage of starting points provided by Grand Hotel itself, enough to anticipate the key role of the large marble sculpture usually positioned in the entrance hall, a nineteenth-century allegory of the abolition of slavery in Brazil whose law was signed during a hotel stay of the Imperial heights Dom Pedro II of Braganza and Teresa Cristina of Bourbon.

For the first time, large-scale installations are set up in the historic rooms of Giuseppe Verdi, little known to the general public. But the large format is not the only new element that Vito Nesta presents during this exhibition. The real novelty is the selected material: the leather, the main element of the production activated for the occasion, demonstrates its extreme adaptability and its expressive force applied to an elegant project, which declares its deep belonging to the city of Milan.

The travel music exhibition.
