In the heart of Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, the Portuguese studio Dionysus LAB has completed a unique architectural project: a house whose facade is made up of aluminum shutters perforated with symbols that tell the history and culture of the city.

This extraordinary residence is a perfect combination of contemporary design and historical roots deeply linked to the sea and fishing.

A Balcony between Two Worlds

Metal accordion shutters rise in front of floor-to-ceiling windows, creating a balcony area between the building's two facades. This architectural element not only gives a distinctive look to the house, but also serves to ensure privacy when necessary. What makes this facade truly special are the symbols that pierce the shutters, symbols that recall the history of Póvoa de Varzim, a town historically linked to fishing.

A Journey into Local Symbols

The symbols imprinted on the shutters represent a tribute to the history of the city, a community historically linked to the sea and fishing. These “siglas poveiras” are a proto-writing system used as a means of communication and to mark personal and fishing goods. They were also hereditary and constituted an important family legacy passed down for generations, evolving with new combinations over time. Each symbol tells a story, a link with the past and a connection with the maritime culture of Póvoa de Varzim.

The Interior of the House

The interior of the house was designed with great attention to functionality and aesthetics. The house is organized on multiple levels, with the social areas positioned on the lower floors and the private spaces on the upper levels. This arrangement creates an extraordinary sensation of visual breadth and dynamic connections between rooms. The staircase, at the center of the building, becomes the heart of the house, highlighted by a wall painted in Blu Klein which underlines its importance and its continuity across the spaces.

A House that Honors the City

The west facade is covered by aluminum Venetian shutters which not only protect the interior from thermal insulation but open the house onto a small garden. On the other side, the east facade is enriched with stainless steel panels perforated with the “siglas poveiras”. This architectural choice not only guarantees the intimacy of the house, but connects it to its identity and the history of the city.

A House That Tells Its Story

The House of Póvoa de Varzim, located in the heart of the “Bairro Norte”, shares the memories and references of the city with its population. This architectural project revitalizes a cultural legacy that was progressively forgotten and abandoned over time. Silently, the house proudly claims its belonging to the city, celebrating its history, maritime culture and the symbols that make Póvoa de Varzim a unique and unforgettable place.
