Renovation of a historic building in Foz, Porto | As Arquitectos it has been modified: 2021-07-17 di Benedetto Fiori

This renovation project of a historic building located in the center of Foz do Douro, in the city of Porto, seeks to rejuvenate one of the typical old houses in the area and adapt it to current needs. Although the interior has been completely demolished, the outer walls of the old house have been preserved.

In the renovation An additional floor has been added using a fully zinc coated windowed dormer, and creating 5 floors inside the old walls instead of 3. In addition to the granite details added to the restored facade, the exterior walls have been completely covered with hand painted tiles, typical of old buildings of the city of Porto, to protect them from the humidity of a coastal environment.

The restructuring interventions

The historic building even after the renovations fits harmoniously into the surrounding environment respecting the height of the neighboring properties and the character of the facades. Everything is new inside, where the two lower levels come together in a double-height commercial space, bright and with large windows that give visibility to and from the street. Two triplexes have been built on the upper floors: one facing the sea and the other facing the city. There is a granite staircase to access the apartments from the side street.

The two apartments they are almost symmetrical and have a large double-height space on the first floor using the five corner windows of the original structure. On this floor there is the living room-kitchen and a bathroom. The first floor is spatially connected with a mezzanine through a double height and exposed steel structure where there is an open study and a complete bathroom.

There are two bedrooms and a bathroom at the third floor, with a spectacular view to the sea or towards the ancient city of Foz. A light metal and wood staircase creates an attractive way of connecting all the levels. The trellis partition in wooden slats separates the staircase and integrates with the space and with the oak wood slats that line the walls. The wood covering some areas offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
