CVDB Arquitectos They have sent this project that won first prize in a competition by invitation for the new Cultural Centre of Cartaxo. The structure is distinguished by bold cantilevered concrete that, as a "belly of a whale", is projected on the sidewalk and foyer for hosting the main room.
This public building is located between two gables, assuming the modest scale of the city's main square Cartaxo. The building features an iconographic and public character that balances the relationship between the small size of the site and the full program. The foyer on the ground floor is strongly linked to the city's main square, thus emphasizing the public character of this building.
Sitrova cinema in the basement, and the main hall was raised from the ground, with the ability to 332 spectators. Transparency and permeability of a porous spatial and visual relationship to be established with the square. From outside you can hear the movement of its users within the building. A flow is generated between the inside and the outside of the building, which is performed and accentuated by the curvature of the bulge cement in view of the "belly of the whale".
Part of the facade is occupied by a screen of concrete and glass that acts as a mediator of scale. The public spaces are built with exposed concrete, slate floors and wood, thus emphasizing the presence of the character of these materials. Strong colors, bright yellow and red are used in the back stage areas. In the two rooms, the light appears as if it were carved on the walls and on the surfaces of ceilings.
