A small but functional house in the Azores in the urban fabric of Ponta Delgada, the "Windmill House" designed by the architecture studio BOX arquitectos is located in the center of a consolidated urban area. Despite the limited space, the two-story single-family home offers a social area downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs.
At just 4,20 meters wide on the front facade, the house looks like it was drawn from a child's imagination, with one door and one window. The main facade separates the inside from the outside, with no relationship between them.
The house's program requires no transition or division spaces. The one social space in the house expands in depth as it meets the garden at the end of the space. The garden strikes a balance with the house and the private addition at the end of the land. Upstairs, the east bedroom overlooks a terrace from which the houses that make up the urban fabric of the neighborhood can be admired.
To create greater spatial amplitude, the pitched roof of the house has skylights that receive the light and diffuse it within the spaces, acting as a "diaphragm" and increasing the "vertical perspective".
The “Windmill House” is an example of how a small space can be cleverly designed to offer a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution. The house blends seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhood and represents an innovative response to the challenges of modern urban architecture.
