The redevelopment project of the Municipal Market of Vila Nova de Famalicão aims to decongest the existing market structure inaugurated in 1952, to offer a more pleasant and hygienic space to consumers and to give a new urban dynamism.
The Municipal Market of Vila Nova de Famalicão, inaugurated in 1952, after a golden age, at the time of the intervention was presented as an obsolete and unattractive space for consumers. The objective of the rehabilitation project, carried out by the Unidade de Projeto Urbano of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão and the architect Rui Ribeiro, responsible for the project, was to enhance the architectural character of the market and improve its existing conditions.
The complex consists of three contiguous rectangular bodies and a turret with the city's coat of arms, which marks the transition between D. Maria II Square and Capitão Manuel Carvalho Street. Access to the market courtyard is located on an upper level, through two entrances, while on the lower level there are three buildings for the sale of meat, fish and fruit.
The intervention involved the construction of a new metal structure that guarantees the ability to meet the needs of the permanent and cyclical market and, at the same time, allows the opening of a new urban front on Marechal Humberto Delgado Avenue and Mouzinho de Albuquerque Square. The roof of the new structure guarantees the shading and watertightness of the space, taking the pre-existing triangular module of the turret as a reference. The end result was to give the market a new and dynamic architectural and functional appeal.
