Chill-out pavilion is an open-air living room designed by Oblò - architecture workshop, in collaboration with Giulia Celentano and Alberto D'Asaro.

Oblò - architecture workshop - a young design collective active between Milan and Paris, founded by Alessandro Benetti, Francesca Coden, Margherita Locatelli and Emanuele Romani - presented, in collaboration with the architects Giulia Celentano and Alberto D'Asaro, the temporary pavilion Chill-out pavilion, as part of the first edition of the Rockavilla Festival (17-20 July 2014, Mariano Comense).

Chill-out pavilion, located in the garden of the eighteenth-century Villa Sormani, was designed to be an open-air lounge, a relaxation area for the festival audience.

The pavilion was created through an inversion of the traditional design process: the materials were not the result of compositional choices, but the starting point that led to the definition of the project. The pavilion was therefore designed exclusively on the basis of the materials available (nothing was purchased): seven lime trees in the park, one hundred and fifty meters of orange yard tulle, one hundred meters of green yard tulle, four reinforcing rods, four chains of light bulbs twenty-four meters long, sixteen wooden reels and seven pallets.

Chill-out pavilion, with its perimeter of semi-transparent green and orange membranes, illuminated from above by the lights of light bulbs, is integrated into the green of the garden, emphasizing the feelings of quiet and intimacy typical of the tree-lined glade of the villa: it was that of a constantly vibrating “lantern”, half hidden among the trees, capable of defining the variable intensity of diffusion of light in the park.

SPACE

The project was inserted in an unprecedented way into the park, articulating itself with two different environments: a circular space of seven meters in diameter, in continuity with the enfilade of the internal rooms of the villa - to underline the ambition of the pavilion to be configured as a real and its own outdoor living room -, and a space with an elongated "L" shape, designed instead to involve some existing elements (stone blocks, benches leaning against the perimeter wall of the villa), extended in such a way as to make the structure visible right from the access to the garden from the street.

The two environments are differentiated, as well as for its shape, even for the type of lighting: the warm light of the circular space, where the ceiling in the open air was crossed by the catenaries, was countered by the brightness of more suffused second room, with the lights strung along the external face.

The thin weave of the construction site sheets - arranged in one, two or more layers - also made it possible to glimpse the domestic environment of the interior of the pavilion, further confirming the close relationship with the surrounding space.

STRUCTURE: SEVEN TIGLI

The foliage of the seven lime trees in the garden of the villa were used as supporting elements of the Chill-out pavilion, so going to be a backbone strong dramatic potential.

Steel rods and wire tie rods played a supporting role for the membranes made up of construction site sheets, and for the outdoor catenaries to which the lighting was entrusted. The sixteen wooden reels and seven pallets formed the furnishings of the pavilion, underlining the domestic atmosphere of the project.
