In the heart of the City of London to the new Motel One Mackay + Partners, with an innovative backlit translucent Corian façade, replaces an office building, giving the historic Minories neighborhood, in the heart of the financial district, a new spark of light.

The new four-star hotel is the recent “new entry” of the Motel One chain and has 291 rooms. The building is made up of two forms: a front, a seven-story “decorative cube” facing the street, and a sixteen-story glass tower at the back.

Designed by Mackay + Partners for builder Endurance Land & Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, the building gives the area a fresh new identity as well as a directional aesthetic vision. The project received the full support of the City of London Planning Department, which was interested in exploring the use of DuPont ™ Corian® as an exterior facade material, as opposed to commonly used materials such as steel, glass or stone.

"The design is totally contemporary and fits perfectly into the current and future urban context," says Ken Mackay Mackay + Partners, "I have worked with DuPont ™ Corian® for other applications so I know its properties well, but the choice of Corian® for the cladding of this project is the result of extensive research and a very close collaboration with DuPont."

This elegant exterior skin of the new building serves as a sustainable open-jointed rainproof façade and is characterized by its unique design. The attractive DuPont ™ Corian® coating in translucent white has a pure and simple finish during the day, while at night, it creates effects with a strong visual impact, illuminating the structure through the backlighting of some panels. The LED lighting system includes a range of colors that can be changed by computer, and the patterns and shades reflect the Motel One branding. This combination of rain cover and LED lighting, according to the architects, is the first
experienced in London.
