iittala after its debut last year renews its appointment with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile.

iittala takes part in the fifty-fourth edition of the event by launching a world preview of the new collections of interior accessories designed by the Dutch Ineke Hans and the triad of Finnish designers and artists Aalto + Aalto, Anu Penttinen and Markku Salo.

The protagonists at the fair will also be the Ruutu vases by the designer brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, a collection that breaks the limits of blown glass thanks to the rigorous geometric shapes. A unique, refined and modular series, acclaimed by the public and already a new icon of the brand, expression of iittala's skilful craftsmanship tradition in the art of glass processing.

Unmissable event is the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985): recognized among the fathers of Scandinavian design, as well as an eclectic artist with unique talent and productivity, protagonist of Finnish modern and industrial art.

In conjunction with the design week, iittala inaugurates, in collaboration with Vodka Finland, the exclusive Pop-up bar “Ultima Thule” dedicated to Wirkkala, who designed over 400 glass objects for Iittala.

Every evening, from 14 April, at the Art bar and restaurant Le Biciclette, it will be possible to taste selected Nordic cocktails based on vodka in the precious Ultima Thule glasses. Wirkkala designed the collection in the 60s, drawing inspiration from the ice of Lapland. Legend has it that Ultima Thule was the most extreme northern island, submerged by ice and snow, where the sun never sets. The exclusive design of the collection is the result of thousands of hours spent perfecting the artisanal glass working technique to reproduce the effect of ice.

The Ultima Thule Pop-Up Bar will remain open every evening from 18:00 to 2:00 for the entire period of Expo and will allow visitors from all over the world to taste the best cocktails in the exclusive glasses of the great master Wirkkala.

Finally, at the showroom in Corso Monforte iittala 19, you can discover new vessels Ruutu, proposed in an unprecedented exhibition inspired by the interiors of Finnish homes and recreated through the most important collections of interior iittala.

iittala, 1881 from the cradle of Scandinavian design

Timeless functionality and design have always been in the DNA of iittala, a Finnish company founded in 1881 in the homonymous village of iittala and part of the Fiskars Group since 2007.

Born as a glass factory, iittala continues to produce hand-blown glass furnishing accessories which, to date, constitute an important part of the production, and contribute to affirming the international prestige enjoyed by the brand. Alongside the glass collections, there are numerous lines of accessories for the home and the table with an essential and functional design that have made iittala products famous and appreciated all over the world.
Suffice it to say that the most famous object of Finnish design, the Aalto vase, was created for iittala by Alvar Aalto in 1936, and is exhibited at the Moma in New York as an icon of international design.

All iittala products combine easily with each other to create a harmonious whole, always new and never banal. Iittala design pioneers such as Kaj Franck, Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, Oiva Toikka, Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva are an important source of inspiration for the brand. Essentiality and modernity are qualities that are still found today in the work of the new generation of iittala designers such as Harri Koskinen (iittala Design Director), Alfredo Häberli, Matti Klenell, Magnus Pettersen, Cecilie Manz and Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, to name but a few.

iittala, thanks to its belonging to the Fiskars Group, officially landed in Italy in 2013, bringing with it generations of products destined to last forever. Fiskars, the oldest Finnish company and one of the oldest multinationals in the world, has been on the market for over 365 years.
