After the success of the 2011 edition and the favor obtained at the Salone del Mobile 2012, at the end of September the Beijing Design Week. Scheduled from September to October 28 6 2012, the festival proposes the format confirmed with the first edition and aims to once again represent a synonym for celebration of design, art, architecture and new technologies. Among the novelties of the program for the 2012 edition, the addition of new sections and the expansion to new areas of the city was announced.

Under the artistic direction reconfirmed by Aric Chen, Beijing Design Week 2012 recreates the sections presented in the last edition, starting with a ceremony of inauguration of a thematic exhibition chaired by senior figures in the creative community and the political world and continuing with the Annual Beijing Design Awards, which aim to promote the excellence of Chinese design; a Beijing Design Forum be attended by the most influential world personalities working in the field of design; an ambitious exhibition program that aims to support and promote projects and peak areas of the city; a program City guest of honor, which this year will see Milan become the spokesperson for Italian design, taking over the role played by London in the last edition. In addition to these sections, this year's program includes the inauguration of a more commercial initiative, the Beijing Design Fair.

As part of the “Milan city guest of honor” program, the project Meet the Media Guru, launched in 2006 as a series of conferences on digital innovation, for Beijing Design Week it will present a unique event simultaneously between Milan and Beijing, to create an engaging environment that expands into physical and virtual space. To coordinate the guests and the new emerging talents of Milan and the Chinese designers, Stefano Boeri, architect and councilor for Culture, Fashion and Design of the Municipality of Milan and Maria Grazia Mattei, director of the Meet the Media Guru project will intervene.

The novelty of Beijing Design Week 2012 is Caochangdi, the area located on the northern outskirts of Beijing which represents a tangible example of a spontaneously born community that has evolved into a village where different social and creative groups live together and operate.
Under the creative direction of Beatrice Leanza, and organized by the BAO Atelier studio, the "city within the city" will present CCD-The Community, a place of encounter and convergence between the local community and the international creative world, which for the Beijing Design Week presents an intense program of creative synergies between art, design and new technologies.
One of the key moments will be the inauguration of the CCD Pavilion, a semi-permanent facility, designed to host live events, seminars, interviews, concerts and panel discussions over the ten days of the festival, and scheduled as an annual commission to a name of fame in the field of architecture / design / art.
Under the collective name of “CCD the Strip” and the theme “Politics of Meeting”, Caochangdi will present the works of the designer Li Naihan, the Hangzhou Innovo collective and the New York artists of Item Idem and Babak Radboy; the projects of the experimental space in Hong Kong ILIVETOMORROW, of the Sino-Italiano architecture studio MICROmacro and of the Dutch designer Henny van Nistelroy, are flanked by projects dedicated to new production and mapping technologies (Fluid Urbanism of the LCD School, Beijing) and smart materials (Carl de Smet / noumenon design, Belgium). Outdoor initiatives include RAWR Lab's interdisciplinary Digital Creative Zone platform and music and design performances by independent Chinese label MAD
There will also be a real networking experiment in an offline dimension presented by the Esterni collective and produced and developed by CCD - the Community. As part of the "Milan city guest of honor" program, Interni magazine, in collaboration with China Industrial Design Association (CIDA) will bring "Interni Legacy" to Beijing, a way to explore the possible legacies of contemporary design through two installations by Alessandro and Francesco Mendini and Zhang Ke - Standardarchitecture, already presented at the Fuori Salone in Milan 2012.

During the ten days of Beijing Design Week, design will permeate the streets and city life, also involving other areas of the city, from Sanlitun to the financial district (CBD), up to the hutongs of old Beijing, the elegant Jinbao Street, the district artistic 798, CAFA and the Museum of the Capital. Starting from 30 September, inside the former 798 factory, UCCA will host a retrospective of Yung Ho Chang, the father of contemporary Chinese architecture. On 30 September UCCA and Rizzoli Beijing, with the Chinese edition of ABITARE and with ABITARE-FESTARCH, thanks to the academic support of Atelier FCJZ, will host an event in which world-famous architects will discuss issues of contemporary architecture.

In Sanlitun, the embassy district, in shops and big international brands, Kartell will present the latest creations by Philippe Starck, while Baccarat will hold a preview of a new collection of vases designed by the students of the Master of Advanced studies in Luxury Industry & Design of ECAL, University of Art and Design of Lausanne.
In the heart of the CBD, Elle Deco will set up an interactive café and pop-up store within the China World Trade Center for Beijing Design Week, with displays of the best of contemporary Chinese design.
On the other side of the city, designers Liu + deBiolley will open their studio in a historic courtyard within one of the historic areas of old Beijing, while the Wuhao concept store will celebrate the alternation of elements and the phase of the element " terra ”with installations, projects and exhibitions coming from collaborations with local designers. The Capital M restaurant, near Dashilar, will be transformed into a pop-lounge space to host conferences, temporary installations and forums on the state and possibilities of design today.
