40 × 40 is a project by Paolo Ulian e Moreno Ratti that part of the recovery of marble tiles remained unused in warehouses of artisan companies.
The two designers have imagined 7 objects that can be made simply by cutting the tiles with a water jet machine and simply assembling the pieces obtained, without any waste of material.
Table lamp PiùOmeno
The four pieces that make up the lamp are obtained by cutting a 40x40x1cm marble tile with the water jet machine, without producing any waste material.
It is easily assembled and disassembled with simple joints. To increase or decrease the intensity of the light, simply move part a forwards or backwards
shaped lampshade is mounted on the main light.
GERLA_vaso + fruit bowl
A marble tile 40x40x4cm inches thick is cut in order to obtain a series of concentric rings of marble oval with very thin thickness.
These are superimposed until they become a 40 cm high vase. The slight grooves caused by the jet of water used to cut the pieces become a natural decoration that characterizes the exterior and interior surface of the vase. The remaining piece can be used as a fruit bowl.
O-RING_portafrutta
Just a tile marble 40x40x1cm thickness to obtain the rings necessary to make a slight and capacious basket with handles.
bowl PIET_fruit
A small bowl of fruit is made with four plates joined together. All parts are made from a marble tile of 40x40x1cm no waste.
Clock QUADRONDO_wall
It is composed of a white marble tile of 40x40x1cm. The waterjet machine cuts are made on the tile to allow the user to choose whether or not to transform the clock shape from square to round by breaking the pre-cut parts.
table SFRID0_coffee
A table consists of two marble tiles 40x40x1cm no waste. A tile to obtain the four pieces that make up the base, and one for the floor. Mounts easily with few assembly operations.
Layer-Stool
The quadrangular rings that make up the seat are obtained from two 40x40x3cm thick marble tiles. The lid, which is always made from marble tiles, can be lifted to use the stool also as a container.
